The Importance of Having an Inside View
I think it's wildly unrealistic to actually have a true inside view in the sense of fully understanding every last detail from first principles and not trusting anyone. The best case scenario you can really hope for is still a pretty low probability of finding the truth. There are lots of people who are plausibly smarter than you, plausibly have thought no more about ASAP than you and have spent much longer thinking about it than you have. These people often disagree. We would not observe that many people even within the EA community who agree on 90% of things wildly disagree about pretty important questions. You just can't reasonably expect to get something that's actually true in an objective sense about such a confusing question about
