The Importance of Ibn Taimiya

Ibn Taimiya is credited with laying down the template for the Salafist movement in Islam. But he lived in a different era and the forces he saw as threatening Islam were not those of the 18th or 21st centuries. The chief historical factor in his thought was the Mongol invasion, which had penetrated far into the Islamic world before Ibn Taimiya even came along.
