Seeing Us as a Threat
Putin may have been very unwise to launch the war, but he wasn't foolish to see that a Western-leaning Democratic Ukraine was a threat. I think we sort of underestimate the degree to which successful liberal democracies and market free market more or less market-oriented states are a problem for both Russia and China. And so I am sure Xi Jinping has the same attitude towards Taiwan that similar attitude has Putin does to Ukraine.
