People pleasing is absolutely a defense mechanism. It's a way in which we care take for ourselves. The first item of business is always to discern, am I actually in danger here by speaking up? And that's a very important piece of nuance because depending on if you are a part of any marginalized community, that might not be a safe endeavor for you. Look for situations where you chronically complain about a specific person or a specific instance and have done nothing about it.
