The Role of Universities in Protecting Science

In the social media age, scientists and institutions like university are as vulnerable to this kind of peer pressure. And I'd rather like those heroic scientists who go off on their own and don't need grants and just get on with their research. The other aspect of protecting scientists is universities. It feels like recently universities have not been good at defending their own when they come under assault by a lynch mob.
