All my history books are really based on original correspondence. There is something incredibly exciting in finding a letter that no one's seen before. Some of these letters in the book I've actually seen the originals of and some of the ones we're reading tonight. That's why letters are so exciting. They catch a moment. They may not be true before, they may not betrue afterwards, but the moment that someone puts pen to paper, that is truth," she says.
