Time was very much of the essence there. It's more valuable to get there in four days with 10,000 troops than to getting there in eight days with 12,000 troops. Even though the Targaryens had it substantially easier than the starks in terms of travel, because of dragons, their courtiers still had to ride over. But that's still closer than Winterfell or White Harbor. Pretty much anywhere they're going unless they're going north. Question is whether any Valyrians have ever thought about using their dragons as a way to transport goods.
