A man needs to be worthy of other men respecting him. That's a facet of having a good reputation. The word the doctor costs is character. It's not our techniques, it's the character behind our communication. And what Paul is simply saying here is that if we're able to teach as he means it, we are able to respond to people who even attack us in a non-defensive way.
