Richard Evans: David Mayberry Lewis was one of the great Americanists. He had traveled into the heart of Brazil in the 1950s to live amongst the Chirante, who at the time were said to be the most feared indigenous groups in Brazil. And while I was with him, he created cultural survival with his wife, Pia. But Schulte's was not a man of ideas. He was a botanist. That's what he was, a plant explorer. and I loved botanical exploration largely because it provided the conduit to culture.
