In the original fairy tale, there's a subtext of necrophilia involved in this too. Gaiman really pushes on that and he says explicitly no, this was a prince who wanted his women to be like, you know, still and kind of basically dead when he was sort of having his way with them. There's a part two where there's a snowflake on her cheek that doesn't melt because she's cold. She's like a corpse even when she's walking around. He resembles her last husband when he was on his deathbed, him and his prime. And he can't, he's he's very not very virile.
