In 19 78 a communist coup overthrew the autocratic dictator of afghanistan. The new regime instituted radical reforms and disappeared tens of thousands of people in an attempt to strengthen their power. In december 19 79, at the request of the afghan communist government, the soviet union sent in the red army. For millions of afghans, the next decade would be filled with brutality. It was these men, these war lords, as they came to be called, that would help shape the next forty years of afghan history.
