The Midwife's Role in Childbirth

Childbirth was an almost exclusively women's world in medieval Britain. Midwives had to make agonising decisions about caesareans and stillbirths. The unbaptised baby who dies has no destiny other than limbo. It would be buried outside the churchyard in unconstricated ground. For that reason a midwife would do her very best not to work alone.
