The Dissociation of a Soldier
Sometimes he'll see people get hit by shells and it just seems to completely wash over him and he doesn't care. Then sometimes he sees it and bursts into tears and just locks up and can't do anything. That seemingly random way of responding to situations or how we were saying before is one of the really interesting parts of this book. It's so human that some things that you feel really should upset you strangely don't, but other things which seem relatively minor, you can't shake them. I mean a lot of those dudes must have been walking around just like, what's that idea in psychiatry of dissociation? Yeah, I got it.
