CHAPTER

The Role of Mitochondria in Retinal Neurodegeneration

The neurons from retina require high energy or a lot of mitochondrial ATP to satisfy their tissue requirements. If your mitochondria are inefficient or dysfunctional in producing ATP, that's where you're going to see these narrow retinal pathologies in the eye when the mitochondria aren't able to produce as much ATP as they need to just for normal function. Red light therapy can respond well to boosting those mitochondria and up regulating ATP production. That also means that when you begin to have mitochondrial dysfunction, those areas are going to decline likely first in likely hardest.
