The Effects of Envy on Friendship
Aquinas distinguishes envy from zeal, which is the passion wherein I feel sad that I don't have some good thing another person does. Aquinas suggests a moral or spiritual degeneration pattern occurs if envy is left unchecked. Envy can lead to pleasure in a person's misfortunes, even beyond the particular competition I lost to them.
