The treatment of the ripper in this reminds me a lot of the ideas that allan moore would would later explore in his his now classic graphic novel from hell about jack the ripper. But he lightly, that line above that we mentioned, implies he feels like the world has ultimately passed passed him by. It's even net his his spirit, but it has surpassed his spirit.
