The Rise of the Rational State in Modernity
The state continues to consolidate as an organizational form over the course of modernity. Montesquieu was writing about 50 years before the French Revolution, it was by our standard still a pretty fragmentary, disorganized body. The French Revolution also changes the base of legitimation of the centralized and centralizing state.
