Albert Saban discovered in 1941 that the polio virus was not just a disease of the nervous system, but one of the intestinal tract. He experimented on 9,000 monkeys and 100 gems before he found a strain of the virus that would reproduce in the intestines. When people who get it go to the bathroom, their feces contains a weakened version of the virus which helps boost immunity as a whole.
