The idea of the deity called Mithra went back as far as the 6th century BC. How and when did Mithras enter Roman culture then? You mentioned this conflict between Rome and modern day Iran. Yes, indeed. And they may have found in particularly appealing because he's often portrayed in Iranian culture as a warrior and as a god of fire. But it is actually based upon perceptions of the Iranian deity.
