Neoliberalism is an economic philosophy. The belief that the state should be neutral and not interfere with people's personal beliefs becomes particularly powerful in the late 70s, early 80s. And so what this does is the markets then become supercharged. In a sense, capitalism is set free, not only under restrictions of the state. This then creates this interesting force where things like religion, culture are sort of pushed down, pushed into the private space by liberalism. But the market unleashed, then becomes an increasingly dominant social force.
