A lesson is not when learning happens. However, it is when teaching does. And to not consider it as a discrete block of time for that reason, I think is madness. Yes you need long term plans, medium term plans that map out these longer journeys. But that hour, let's say an hour, where you've got kids coming from somewhere weird, going to somewhere weird? To assume that you could just pick up from where you left off three days ago, two hours, however long ago is madness. You need that structure, those habitualised routines within a lesson that create an emotionally and physically safe but intellectually challenging environment.
