The Story of Campion and the Jesuits
Recent research has shown how the Jesuit fathers deliberately colluded in working up a narrative of state paranoia surrounding their arrival. They also adopted, and it seems possibly even relished, a number of elaborate disguises on the dangerous crossing from Rome via Ireland. On arrival, Campion's brief career as a missionary preacher before his eventual capture and execution was accompanied by a very flamboyant literary trail. His final words are quoted in an eyewitness account by Father Thomas Oldfield, who was himself a future martyr.
