The Problem With Vulcanization
I don't know if the average person has really given up on the American experiment. I get the sense that, um, people still want like a quote unquote America or quote unquote United States. They just want to have a different kind of U.S., but they don't want it to break apart into two countries. People living in coastal cities and then the people living in like the deep south and the Midwest who are out in rural counties both see themselves as having nothing in common with each other. Regardless of whether anyone holds the conscious thought of vulcanizing the country, that's more indicative to me than what anybody else thinks.
