The Importance of Esperanto in Conlanging

There are groups who find this idea of a common language appealing. Notice that none of these people are European, so obviously Esperanto is not that offensive to non-speakers of European languages. Do we think there's anything a beginning conlanger can learn from Esperanto? Apart from what not to do if you're trying to create a language that looks natural?
