In the fifties and sixties, there was a whole lot of federally subsidized artistic activity funded by establishment philanthropic organizations. This is very different from the iconoclastic sense of writers that emerges much more in the sixties and seventies. People really did believe that liberal, democratic capitalism might be the only possible solution to a globe torn by fashism and communism. There were just opportunistic artists who took advantage of the new american prosperity in the expending American empire.
