The KF is an essential component of the control of breathing circuits. Ablation of the KF leads to slowed or athemistic breathing, depending on whether the vagus nerve is intact or not. Our hypothesis is that opioids are inhibiting excitatory projections from the KF to these regulatory centers like the free-buttinger complex.
