Neil DeGrasse Tyson saw the Wired Science pilot and said he wanted to be a part of it. He suggested that she get her PhD in astrophysics, which she did not have at the time. She also applied for an astronaut program but got laser eye surgery instead. The show is set to air on PBS next year.
