Many Americans express the view explicitly or implicitly that they have a right to drive. It's often the case that shopping malls and other attractions are built with the car in mind. Expanding road capacity sometimes means reducing the number of crosswalks for pedestrians, Peter says. The money spent on doing this comes at the expense of improving public transport he adds.
