Cyrus learned from an early age that if you want to make a big ask of people at some point later in your career, build up a long track record of keeping your word. It was manifest that whenever a man conferred any benefit upon Cyrus or did him any harm, he always strove to outdo him. The brave were seen to be most prosperous, while cowards were deemed fit to be their slaves. But it was the brave in war, as all agree, whom he honored especially.
