The phrase "culture war" was coined in 1991 by sociologist James Davison Hunter. In the book, Hunter says there has always been a clash between religious and secular forces in America. The modern use of the phrase began with conservative backlash politics in the 1970s. John Ronson's podcast series Things Fall Apart starts in the 70s that it's about the culture wars.
