The sixth message that he was at home is the point where he's stuck and it's not like answering the phone would have changed the outcome of his father dying too so there's that whole entire process I mean it's just that huge level of of guilt attached to not picking up the phone and having that last final word with his father. see it well and you literally see him going over that over and over again when he has the answering machine.
