For the majority of history in Britain, mad or mentally ill people lived in the community. So there wasn't like a mental health system that institutionalized people. And then in the 19th century, you see this kind of big explosion in a silums across Britain. I argue that the system expanded so much because of the capitalist economic system and the emergence of capitalism.
