Bodan and the Natural Law - The Difference Between a Law and a Contract

Bodan was a famous proponent of absolute monarchy, but at least it allowed him to respond to criticisms that he was allowing unrestrained authority to the sovereign. The natural law imposes another important constraint on the sovereign: He must abide by any contracts he makes with his subjects. Bodan is not then a social contract theorist, though he does think that sovereignty can be established when a people consents to hand power to a single authority.
