The Maori organizations being primarily leftist, apparently aligned themselves with the leftist courses and political ideologies. There was also an increase in strike activity and general class struggle happening during the late 1960s. Trade unions were playing a crucial role in providing an organizational base for Maori protest groups. They advocated for an alliance between Maori and progressive elements within the working class.
