The Dark Matter of the Universe

In 1978 an astrophysicist at Princeton realized that the rotation of galaxies could not be explained gravitationally by ordinary matter. Vera Rubin extrapolated that there must be some unseen type of matter that surrounds these galaxies in a halo. Since then it's been dubbed "dark matter," which just means invisible matter, and so it ironically reinstates this old ether idea in a modern context. I think it's a strong candidate for the spirit stuff that human beings have been perceiving all these many thousands of years, says Michael Faraday.
