Is There a Difference Between Poetry and Rap?

There's this huge ongoing debate over whether rap qualifies as poetry. And it's just all written by middle aged white men, pretty much. I don't go to poetry readings, but im there is a dude, in fact, i'm going to read one of his poems later. There's a modern poet named derrick brown. His poems are awesome.
