The Strange Smile of Chester

When I was in second grade, my family and I moved to Alabama. There were no kids in our previous neighborhood so I met a girl around my age who lived about a quarter of a mile down the road from our new home. She and I became fast friends and played together often. One day when we were playing in Cheryl's backyard, Chester came home carrying a small crumpled brown paper bag. He had firecrackers made up of a bunch of short red sticks with fuses woven together that could be lit at once.
