A lot of queer people find themselves in these cult situations like the one i'm in. I think that it comes from, and my dad actually pointed this out to me,. It comes from isolation and rejection, whether perceived or actual. And you surround yourself with cheer leaders, people to support you...it starts there. You don't have to tell them 15 years later and hope that they'll, you know, that they'll catch you the they start thatway.
