CHAPTER

The Origins of Unfree Labor in the Ancient Mediterranean

Mary in our last episode we had David when grow making the point that not all societies in the ancient world were slave societies. Some chose not to have slaves some were quite egalitarian some were not even particularly hierarchical. By the time we're talking about the early days of Rome the early centuries BC other any egalitarian societies around in the Mediterranean at all or is everybody part of a slave world at this point? Mary: I think no society that doesn't have some form of unfree labor now whether you call that then a slave society I think is a very different question and most people don't.
