Machiavelli's the Prince - A History of Modern Politics
Machiavelli's the prince predates hobbs by nearly a hundred and 50 years. Many of those lessons speak to politicians now as though they were written yesterday. But i don't think you can start a history of modern ideas about politics with that book, because it's not a modern book. The first line says, all the states that have held dominion over men are either republics or principalities. Either or is the pre modern conception of politics.
