The Impacts of Sea Walls on Marine Life
Rigid sea walls can also restrict shorelines from naturally shifting back and forth which is another problem. These structures often have very smooth featureless surfaces made of concrete or hard rock that don't provide the same kinds of nooks and crannies for marine life to thrive in. They're also very expensive. It can cost billions of dollars to build, maintain and update one. And when we build a sea wall what we do is actually cut off that natural connection between land and sea.
