The Maori Land Rights Movement in New Zealand
The Maori Land Rights movement emerged from 1975 to 1978, bringing together diverse range of activists. They saw alliances with workers both Maori and Pakehel, viewing them as natural allies in the fight against oppression. The occupation of Bastian point and subsequent eviction from Bastian point intensified the direct conflict that the movements were having with the state. In the early 1980s, the Watangi action committee, Maori people's liberation movement of our terror and the black women's movement emerged as prominent Maori political activist groups.
