Union Carbide - The Cleanup of the UCIL Plant Site
Canadian researchers are in the process of conducting a long-term study and mortality, birth defects, fertility, cancer, and other ailments caused by the old plant. The study suggests that folks who were exposed to the gas or to the water near the plant have 10 times the rate of cancer compared to other groups. Dow claims that the responsibility for cleaning up the mass Union Carbide left behind lies with Union Carbide India, which is now called Everready Industries India. A recent Greenpeace report estimated it would cost $30 million to clean up the remaining waste at the old Union Carbide plant over a period of four years.
