Willard's Moral Victory in the Vietnam War
The difficulty with the ending is that there's no real direction for moral victory for Willard's character at that point. I'm still not sure what exactly his final act or his decision to Kilkurtz and just go out of there means. The symbolism of Kurt's being treated as like the sacrifice that that you know oh he's the insane one and we can kill him kind of justifies the rest of us in some way so maybe there's some symbolism there. We also see Willard coming out onto the top of the steps afterwards and everybody kind of bowing down to him.
