In Mesopotamia, they had what were called Nambirby rituals. They would do sometimes when there was a negative indication or a negative omen indicated by the divination. One of the most famous ones was the substitute king ritual where if there was like a bad eclipse that indicated negative things for the king or for the kingdom, they might substitute and take some like peasant or some farmer and like make him king for a week. And then after that was over, they would make him not the king.
