When a country strikes gold, it can actually be worse for the people of that country than if they had never found it. Since 1990, oil-producing countries have been twice as likely to have had a civil war compared with non-oil-producing countries. While wars and conflict don't help, there are a plethora of reasons that countries with a lot of natural resources tend to grow slower than countries without them.
