You could smoke on board the plane and they didn't care if you did, because it was a normal part of the culture. They gave you real metal knives and forks to eat your meal. The flight crew did not give the passengers a constant stream of orders or threaten you with massive fines for disobeying them. So flying was a much more relaxed experience in a lot of ways. While airplanes were still safe, they weren't as safe as they are to day.
