Land was common in the sense of there weren't fences and private property. We're so deep now in this system of private enclosures and private property that it is sort of far in thought to think that large pieces of land could be held as part of the commons or held in common trust. Even if people don't know what's happening, we see that problem every single day in every single community where someone owns a building on Main Street but they are charging too high of rent.
