Many people are conditioned to buy into things. And I think there's several experiments that have been done just analyzing human behavior that sort of underpin and give credence to that notion. So the Milgram Experiments were done to try to see, they were essentially seeing testing obedience to authority. The Stanford prison experiment really showed that when people are given a certain amount of authority, they will wield that authority against their subjects in a way that is very clearly harmful and humane.
