In the immediate aftermath of the second world war, the soviets were very keen to develop their own sphere of influence. So there soon developed a huge amount of suspicion. The americans and the british developed nuclear arms. And before we knew it, there was a bit of an arms race. Both parties were concerned about what the other could do to each other.
